The Ushers' Guild

The ushers serve as ambassadors of goodwill to members and visitors of the Church of the Advent. These volunteers cover Sunday Masses and other special services. The central purpose of the Ushers' Guild is to ensure order in our worship, to facilitate the presentation of oblations, and to collect the tithes and offerings. There are teams of Ushers who serve in rotation. If you are interested in serving as an usher, please call the church office.

Duties of the Ushers

Welcoming Visitors
Whenever the doors of the church are open, we are visited by many people; some to attend Mass, some who are merely curious. On Sundays and the major holy days, the first person a visitor meets is the usher who is distributing the service bulletin.

Liturgical Duties

  • Selecting oblation bearers, who present the bread and wine
  • Collecting the congregation's offering and bearing the alms to the altar
  • At Communion:
    • Directing communicants to places at the altar rail
    • Assisting those who have difficulty negotiating the steps
    • Arranging for the Blessed Sacrament to be brought to the nave for those unable to climb steps
  • Make a tally of individuals present at Mass and receiving Communion--numbers used in our parochial reports to the congregation, diocese, and national church

Other Duties

  • Ensuring that special Mass booklets or inserts are available
  • Ensuring that the pew racks have hymnals and prayerbooks
  • Removing used paper items from the pews after Mass
  • Keeping the pews as tidy and inviting as possible
